The average American resides in a home that is 1200 to 2000 square foot two to four-bedroom 2 bathroom single structure homes affording them tons of privacy and personal space needed for a life time.
We reside in castles compared to Mexico 325, Hong Kong 484 and Russia 613 sq. foot residences according to Shrinkthatfootprint.com. Even the average citizen in the United Kingdom only resides in a 818 square foot residence.
Our luxury homes come with a $300 to 500,000 price tag and it’s only going to get worse. A two-story wood and brick home I resided in previously in Denver the original owner built for $4000.00 in the 1940’s now sells for $150,000. Nothing’s changed but the exterior paint job. A relative’s home in East Hampton NY built back in the 1970’s now listed selling for $ 7 million dollars. A simple 2000 sq. ft four-bedroom 3 bath 2 car garage with pool. Timing and location is everything.
How does this apply to end prepping, the average person in this country needs 10 square feet of personal space to feel comfortable and not go crazy. In a time when more suicides and mental health crisis issues are making the news we should pay attention to this as it applies to End Prepping.
The average vacation survival cabin in the woods, 600 to 800 square feet, comes with the cost of $35000 to $60,000 to build and that is with just the basics. Maybe reducing our carbon foot print and moving to smaller spaces is not a bad idea in preparing for hard times. If your trying to picture 600 sq. feet living space think of a two-car garage. Adapting to the situation will be very strenuous.
Re thinking the floor plan of your survival shelter will be a must, in Korea showers and tubs are replace with just drains in the bathroom floors, the idea of bunk beds will comeback. Building into surrounding terrain features will assist in reducing cooling and heating needs. Looking at sunrise and sunset before building to allow as much daily sunlight into the house will save energy and vaulted ceilings with sky lights should make the space feel bigger and more open.
Assign tasks and jobs to your group covering things like down time, cooking, fire watch, and security 24 hours of the day will free up space with multiple different people sharing the same bed space similar to crews on ships or submarines. Cover mattresses with plastic bags and assign each person their own bedding.
I currently reside with two to three other adults at a time in a three-bedroom two bath 1800 square foot trailer and house my 4 dogs and 6 cats in my room when the weather is bad. The only reason this setup works is because most of our time is spent in the great outdoors and I go for daily long walks with the dogs.
Each person has their own silverware and dishes are washed by the person who used it. I have my own coffee cup as a creature comfort item. Even the cats and dogs share feeding bowls during their scheduled feeding times. You may not like it but daily routines, schedules and tasks make life easier during times of reduced living space. Practicing good hygiene is a must.
Other countries are already living in reduced spaces on a daily basis mostly because over population demands it. They are doing it to survive.
All the internet, WIFI, cell phones, personal computers, tablets and televisions are not going to help when you are tripping over your family or neighbors and the provider reduces service in a crisis situation.
For those of us that are blessed or lucky enough to reside in America we in the United States have about 800 television or media receiver’s units per every 1000 people compared to Russia where there are 400 television or media receivers to every 1000 people.
We are covered daily in entertainment sources all which require power to transmit and receive signals. I use the internet for news and research. I just finished three weeks without internet, phone, television or any connection to the outside world and I tell you it was stressful, and it sucks. Wrong time to discover my lap top is to old and does not play DVD movies.
What will your living arrangements be like when the end time comes?
As always be safe and healthy my friends.
